Social Art Intervention - How?
I chose a simple yet effective way of “intervening” or communicating with the public; the good old flyer with “telephone number” slips to pull off.
Initial Ideas and Sketches
-The Green taking over the city...
-The greenery bursting out of the stone wall...
-The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham
Aim
To cause Jerusalem residents to think about the idea of adopting some sort of green roof system in and around the city of Jerusalem or even simply to create more of a green environment and less of a concrete jungle.
The Flyer
Green Roof Benefits in Short
-Insulates very well. ie. Keeps building warm in Winter and cool in Summer.
-Absorbs rain; prevents flooding caused by storm water runoff.
-Reduces the temperature in densely populated urban areas (brings down the unnaturally high temperature caused by cities - also known as the Heat Island Effect).
-Provides significant sound insulation, green roof absorbs urban noise pollution.
-Aesthetics. It's beautiful!
In Summary
In retrospect I should have had a more two-sided communication with the Jerusalem residents, in other words, if they exhibited interest and took a "phone slip" from my flyer...then what? Maybe there should have been some link to a blog or a website or a chatroom or a green club in Jerusalem. Anything that would have led to further action and thought provoking activities than an "I identify" slip of paper torn off a flyer.
